(dorar.net)
(Encyclopédie des Hadiths Traduit)
(Islam Web)
(Baheth)
(Encyclopédie des Hadiths Traduit)
(Encyclopédie des Hadiths Traduit)
(dorar.net)
The Teachings of the Prophet ﷺ on Turning Away from What Angers Allah and His Messenger
Introduction
One of the greatest qualities of a believer is to know when to speak, when to remain silent, when to respond, and when to walk away from an argument or provocation.
Islam does not teach a person to respond to every insult, every argument, or every form of foolish speech. Rather, the Qur'an praises believers who avoid vain speech and pass by it with dignity. The Qur'an describes the believers as those who turn away from vain talk, and describes the servants of the Most Merciful as those who pass by such speech with dignity. (Corpus du Coran)
This does not mean abandoning truth or remaining silent in the face of a duty. Rather, it means avoiding useless disputes, sinful speech, anger-driven reactions, and matters that bring no benefit.
1. Leaving What Does Not Concern You
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Indeed, among the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him.”
This narration is reported in Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi. The grading of individual chains differs, so it is better to present it with its hadith-source attribution rather than claiming without qualification that it is ṣaḥīḥ. (Sunnah)
What does this teach us?
A believer should not involve himself in every matter around him.
He does not need to:
answer every provocation;
investigate every rumor;
enter every argument;
comment on everything;
expose people's faults;
spend his time following useless disputes.
Sometimes the wisest answer is simply:
“This does not concern me, and I will not allow it to disturb my heart.”
2. “Speak Good or Remain Silent”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.”
This is authentically reported in Sahih Muslim. (Sunnah)
This short statement contains an enormous principle of Islamic manners.
Before speaking, the believer should ask:
Is what I am about to say good?
If yes, he may speak.
If it is harmful, insulting, false, or likely to create greater conflict, silence may be better.
The wisdom of silence
Silence is not always weakness.
Sometimes silence means:
self-control;
wisdom;
dignity;
protection from sin;
protection from harming another person;
refusing to become involved in pointless conflict.
3. The Strong Person Is the One Who Controls Anger
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The strong man is not the one who wrestles others down; rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when angry.”
This is authentically reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. (Sunnah)
This hadith completely changes our understanding of strength.
True strength is not simply physical power.
A person may be capable of answering an insult with an even harsher insult, yet choose restraint.
He may be able to retaliate, yet choose forgiveness.
He may be angry, yet refuse to allow anger to make him commit injustice.
That is strength.
4. Turning Away from Vain Speech
Allah says:
“And those who turn away from ill speech.”
Qur'an 23:3
The Qur'an lists turning away from vain speech among the qualities of the believers. (Corpus du Coran)
Allah also says concerning the servants of the Most Merciful:
“And when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.”
Qur'an 25:72 (Corpus du Coran)
This is an extraordinary principle:
Not every conversation deserves your participation.
Not every insult deserves an answer.
Not every provocation deserves your anger.
Not every controversy deserves your time.
5. Responding to Anger with Faith
When anger becomes intense, the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions ways of controlling it. In an authentic narration, when two men insulted one another and one of them became extremely angry, the Prophet ﷺ indicated that saying:
“I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.”
could help remove the state of anger. (Sunnah)
Therefore, when anger begins:
Stop the argument if possible.
Do not immediately answer.
Seek refuge in Allah from Satan.
Avoid insulting or threatening the other person.
Give yourself time to calm down.
Return to the matter later if a legitimate discussion is still necessary.
6. Forgiveness and Restraining Anger
Allah praises those who:
“restrain anger and pardon people; and Allah loves those who do good.”
This Qur'anic principle teaches that the believer should not allow anger to control his behavior.
Forgiveness does not mean approving wrongdoing.
It means that, when forgiveness is appropriate, a person chooses not to become consumed by revenge.
7. The Difference Between Wisdom and Weakness
Turning away from useless conflict does not mean accepting oppression.
A Muslim may defend a legitimate right, seek justice, advise someone, or prevent harm.
But even when defending a right, he should avoid:
lying;
injustice;
slander;
insults;
transgression;
revenge beyond what is justified.
The goal is not simply:
“How can I defeat this person?”
Rather:
“How can I deal with this situation in a way that pleases Allah?”
8. Lessons from the Lives of the Righteous
The classical Islamic books of zuhd, adab, purification of the soul and biographies of the righteous contain many accounts emphasizing restraint, silence, forgiveness, humility and avoidance of unnecessary disputes.
However, such reports do not all have the same level of authenticity as the Qur'an or the rigorously authenticated hadith collections.
Therefore, when presenting stories attributed to early righteous Muslims, it is important to distinguish between:
Authentic Qur'anic verses and sound prophetic hadiths
and
historical anecdotes, wisdom sayings and reports attributed to pious people.
The latter can provide moral lessons, but should not be treated as established prophetic teachings unless their attribution is sound.
9. A Practical Rule for Everyday Life
Before responding to someone who has angered you, ask yourself:
Is my response necessary?
If not, walk away.
Is my response beneficial?
If not, silence may be better.
Will my response make the situation worse?
If yes, wait.
Am I defending truth or merely defending my ego?
This is one of the most important questions.
Can I respond without sinning?
If you cannot, silence and withdrawal may be safer.
10. The Golden Principle
The Prophetic approach can be summarized as follows:
Do not enter every battle.
Do not answer every provocation.
Do not follow every rumor.
Do not speak about everything.
Do not let anger control you.
Leave what brings doubt or harm.
Speak good or remain silent.
Forgive when forgiveness is beneficial.
Stand for justice without becoming unjust yourself.
A Short Prayer
O Allah, make us among those who turn away from vain speech, control their anger, forgive others, protect their tongues, and choose what pleases You. O Allah, keep us away from every word and action that brings Your displeasure, and guide us toward truth, wisdom, patience and mercy. Ameen.

Introduction
répondre à toutes les provocations ;
suivre toutes les rumeurs ;
intervenir dans toutes les disputes ;
commenter tout ce qu'il voit ;
rechercher les défauts des autres ;
se maîtriser lorsqu'on est insulté ;
éviter une parole regrettable ;
pardonner lorsque le pardon est préférable ;
refuser la vengeance personnelle ;
(Sunnah)
Lorsque la colère apparaît :
interrompre la discussion si possible ;
éviter de répondre immédiatement ;
chercher refuge auprès d'Allah ;
ne pas insulter ;
ne pas menacer ;
attendre que la colère diminue ;
le Coran ;
les hadiths authentiquement établis ;
les paroles des Compagnons ;
les récits historiques ;
les anecdotes de spiritualité ;
