(Quran.com)

(Quran KSU)

(Quran KSU)

(Quran KSU)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

(Quran.com)

Image

Image

Image

Image

(Quran KSU)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

(Wikisource)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

(Quran KSU)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

(Quran KSU)

(Quran.com)

🇬🇧 English Version

The Meaning of the Qur'anic Verse:

“They plotted, and Allah planned; and Allah is the best of planners.”

Qur'an, Surah Al 'Imran 3:54

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

1. The Context of the Verse

Allah says:

“And they plotted, and Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners.”
Qur'an 3:54

The verse occurs in the context of the story of Jesus ('Isa), peace be upon him, and the people who rejected him and plotted against him.

According to the classical commentaries, those who opposed Jesus conspired against him and sought to kill him. Al-Tabari explains that their plot consisted of agreeing among themselves to attack and kill Jesus. (Quran.com)

But their plan was not the final word.

Allah's decree was above their plan.

2. What Does “They Plotted” Mean?

The Arabic word مكر (makr) refers to a hidden plan or scheme.

In the context of the verse, it refers to the plot of those who opposed Jesus.

They thought they had calculated everything.

They believed that they could reach him.

They believed that their plan would succeed.

But they did not understand that human planning remains under the power and decree of Allah.

This is one of the central lessons of the verse:

Human beings may plan, but they do not control the final outcome.

3. What Does “Allah Planned” Mean?

This is perhaps the most important theological point.

When the Qur'an attributes makr to Allah, it does not mean injustice, oppression or a morally evil form of deception.

Allah says:

“Your Lord is never unjust to His servants.”

And:

“Indeed, Allah does not wrong people in the least.”

Classical scholars explained the expression according to its context.

Al-Qurtubi mentions interpretations including Allah's bringing about the consequences of their plotting, and His causing their plans to fail. He also discusses the meaning of their being led into consequences they did not anticipate. (Quran KSU)

Al-Tabari likewise reports interpretations in which Allah's “plot” refers to His defeating their scheme and bringing about His decree. (Quran.com)

Therefore, a safe and accurate explanation is:

Allah's “makr” means that Allah countered their hidden scheme with His perfect decree and rendered their plot ineffective.

4. “Allah Is the Best of Planners”

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The final part of the verse is:

“And Allah is the best of planners.”

This means that Allah's wisdom, knowledge and power completely surpass human schemes.

A person may have:

  • money;

  • influence;

  • supporters;

  • secret plans;

  • political power;

  • social influence.

Yet none of these can overcome Allah's decree.

The human being sees only a small part of reality.

Allah knows:

the beginning, the middle, the end, what is hidden and what is apparent.

This is why the believer does not lose hope simply because a powerful person appears to have control.

5. The Story of Jesus: When the Plot Failed

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The Qur'an states:

“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them.”
Qur'an 4:157

And Allah says:

“Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself.”
Qur'an 4:158

Thus, according to the Qur'an, the opponents did not achieve what they intended.

They planned one outcome.

Allah decreed another.

This is precisely the context in which the verse says:

“They plotted, and Allah planned.”

Ibn Kathir explains that the opponents of Jesus intended to harm and crucify him, but Allah saved him and raised him. (Quran KSU)

Al-Tabari also records early reports concerning the event, while noting interpretations of how the plot was frustrated. (Quran.com)

Important distinction

The Qur'an establishes clearly that:

Jesus was not killed or crucified by his enemies and Allah raised him.

As for the detailed reports concerning exactly how the resemblance occurred, classical tafsir contains several transmitted reports, and they should not all be treated as equally certain.

6. The Story of Joseph: A Plot That Became a Path to Honor

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The story of Joseph (Yusuf), peace be upon him, is another magnificent example.

His brothers plotted against him.

They said:

“Kill Joseph or cast him away to some land so that your father's attention will be only for you.”
Qur'an 12:9

They thought they were removing Joseph forever.

But what happened?

Joseph was thrown into the well.

Then he was found by travelers.

He was taken to Egypt.

He was sold.

He was imprisoned unjustly.

Then Allah brought him out of prison.

Eventually, he became a person of authority in Egypt.

The Qur'an says:

“Thus We established Joseph in the land.”
Qur'an 12:21

Ibn Kathir highlights Allah's subtle care for Joseph and the way his circumstances became a means of establishment and preparation. (Quran KSU)

And when Joseph finally revealed himself to his brothers, he said:

“Indeed, whoever is mindful of Allah and patient—surely Allah never wastes the reward of those who do good.”
Qur'an 12:90

(Quran KSU)

The lesson:

A trial that looks like destruction may become the beginning of elevation.

The brothers saw the well.

Allah saw the future.

7. The Story of Abraham and the Fire

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The people of Abraham, peace be upon him, wanted to punish him.

Allah says:

“They said: Burn him and support your gods, if you are going to do anything.”
Qur'an 21:68

But Allah commanded:

“O fire! Be cool and safe for Abraham.”
Qur'an 21:69

The people saw a fire.

But Allah saw a means of displaying His power.

The lesson:

Do not look only at the apparent strength of a cause.

Look at the Lord of all causes.

8. The People of the Cave

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The young believers mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf left their people to protect their faith.

Allah says:

“Indeed, they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.”
Qur'an 18:13

The cave appeared to be a place of fear and weakness.

But Allah transformed it into a place of protection.

This teaches us:

A closed door in the eyes of people may be an open door of protection in the sight of Allah.

9. “The Evil Plot Only Encompasses Its Own People”

Another powerful Qur'anic principle is:

“The evil plot only encompasses its own people.”
Qur'an 35:43

This does not necessarily mean that every wrongdoer is punished immediately.

Sometimes a person is given time.

Sometimes his apparent success continues.

But delay is not the same as escape.

Allah says:

“We will gradually lead them on from where they do not know.”
Qur'an 7:182

Therefore, worldly success alone is not proof of Allah's approval.

10. What Should a Believer Do When Facing a Plot?

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The verse teaches several practical lessons.

1. Do not despair

Human plans are not the end of the story.

2. Do not rush into revenge

Leave room for Allah's wisdom.

3. Take legitimate means

Trust in Allah does not mean abandoning responsible action.

4. Do not become unjust

Being oppressed does not give permission to oppress others.

5. Keep your heart attached to Allah

Even when people abandon you, Allah sees you.

6. Be patient

Some forms of relief take time.

7. Ask Allah for protection

The believer seeks protection without becoming a source of injustice.

11. A Careful Note About Supplications Using the Word “Makr”

Some classical writings mention supplications using expressions such as asking Allah to counter the plotting of enemies. Al-Qurtubi discusses such formulations in his commentary. (Quran KSU)

However, for ordinary supplication, it is clearer and safer to use established meanings such as:

“O Allah, protect me from the evil of those who intend harm against me.”

“O Allah, remove injustice from me and protect me from the plots of wrongdoers.”

“Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs.”

The goal should be protection, justice and the removal of harm, rather than asking for personal revenge.

12. The Deepest Spiritual Meaning

The most beautiful lesson of this verse is:

Do not measure your future by the strength of the people plotting against you.

A person may think:

“They have everything.”

But Allah may open a door that they cannot close.

A person may think:

“My situation is finished.”

But Allah may turn the entire situation around.

Joseph went from a well to a palace.

Abraham went from fire to safety.

The story of Jesus demonstrates that his enemies did not accomplish what they intended.

These stories teach one great principle:

Allah's decree is above every human scheme.

13. A Beautiful Supplication for Protection

O Allah, Knower of what is hidden and what is apparent, protect me from the evil of those who intend harm against me.

O Allah, remove injustice from me and do not allow me to become unjust because I have been wronged.

O Allah, place Your protection above my fear, Your wisdom above my confusion, and Your relief above my hardship.

O Allah, if there is good for me in this matter, open it for me; and if there is harm in it, turn it away from me and turn me away from it.

O Allah, make the outcome of my affairs good, and show me Your gentleness in everything that frightens me.

Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

  • d'argent ;

  • de pouvoir ;

  • d'influence ;

  • de relations ;

  • de stratégies secrètes ;
